JUMPING JACK by PATSEY GRAY No interior illustrations except for diagrams/drawings of the Handy Course at East Canyon and the Challenge Cup Course. Horse Story Book / Hunter Jumper Story Hardcover. No dustjacket. Copyright 1965. Stated First Edition and a First Printing from the number line. 160 pages. ABOUT THE BOOK: The most exciting place in the world to thirteen-year-old Jill was Miss Van’s riding club. Although not a member, Jill spent all her spare time at the club – exercising the horses, teaching children’s classes, and best of all, riding Jumping Jack, the club’s prize jumper. Jill and Jack had taken the coveted Challenge Cup the previous year, and Jill had high hopes of winning it again this year. Then the blow fell, Miss Van announced at a special club meeting that, because of her health, she would be taking a two month leave of absence. What would the club do without Miss Van? No one could imagine, but Miss Van assured them that she had arranged for an excellent substitute in Captain Clark, a steeplechase rider who was supposed to have ridden in the famous Grand National itself. Then she left, with a few special parting words to Jill and Jack, “You two take care of each other.” Taking care of Jack proved to be more difficult than Jill could have imagined, however, for Captain Clark, far from being the suave and accomplished horseman he seemed at first, turned out to be a cowardly, overbearing bully, and a cheat as well. From the first he seemed to resent Jill, and when he started to take an interest in Jack too, she didn’t know where to turn. Jill could only remember Miss Van’s parting words, and try to hold out until the owner’s return. Patsey Gray’s business, family life, and hobbies are all concerned with horses. She has ridden since she was quite small, and as a girl showed hunters and jumpers and rode races at the fairs and rodeos of California, just like the heroines of her books. In the course of her riding career she has won some five hundred events. CONDITION NOTES: Hardcover boards show light to moderate wear.
