Description

“The Star-Treader and Other Poems” by Clark Ashton Smith (A.M. Robertson, 1912, 1st edition, 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" original tan boards with decorative gilt stamping, title page printed in black and red). Good condition with no dust jacket. The author’s first book, fifty-five poems, 100 pages. In this time period it was common practice for publishers to only bind up as many copies as they had orders for, then sit on the printed sheets until they got enough orders to bind up another batch of copies. Hence the variant bindings of the author's first book (next bindings were gray or blue paper-covered boards). Of the original 2000 copy edition 1000 were lost due to fire. CONDITION: Good/very good with age tanned spine and some edge browning; light bump at base of back cover spine; (1920) gift inscription on first free end paper (see photo); two poems checked-marked with a small “X” next to the titles on the Contents Page, and those two poems (“Nero” and “Ode to the Abyss”) have diagonal slash “/” mark annotations (probably for reading aloud – see page 18 scan for an example) and one other poem, “The Medusa” also has slash mark annotations. Smith is considered one of the big three of “Weird Tales” along with Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft and was a member of the H. P. Lovecraft circle. Please see our other auctions for rarely offered Arkham House, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Frank Belknap Long and A. Merritt material (including “Fanciful Tales of Time and Space” #1) plus “Weird Tales” and “Boys’ Friend Library” pulp magazines and happy to combine postage on multiple wins.
