Description

Published in 1933, This first edition, wonderful anthology of early twentieth century authors has something for everybody. The stories and poems were selected by W. Somerset Maugham, and he has some fascinating notes and interesting observations regarding the authors and about writing and literature in general. If you like ocean adventure stories, Youth by Joseph Conrad is well worth the price of admission by itself. Conrad had worked as a seaman and became captain of a big, square rigged sailing ship, so he wrote from real world experience. A Night at Pietramala by Aldous Huxley is an amusing account of a road trip from Florence to Bologna across the mountains of Italy in the early days of the automobile. I found the stories by Martin Armstrong similar to O'Henry in the use of humor and irony. If you're in the mood for something more philosophical, there are several stories by Bertrand Russell. H.G. Wells, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster, Oliver Onions and many others have essays, stories, and poems in this 1,688 page book. Regarding condition, the color is faded along the outside of the spine. The paper in the first few pages are a little wavy, (see pictures of the table of contents and you'll see what I mean). And you can see down into the gutter between the title page and the second fly leaf. These faults are shown in photos, so please see photos. The pages are all well attached, and this is a good, readable copy; so much so that I've been working my way through it myself. 8
